The Science Behind the Famlee Fertility Solutions

We believe that a balanced body is the key to a healthy pregnancy. That’s why our at-home labs are uniquely designed to test for whole-body health, not just those normally connected with reproduction. In total, Famlee identifies 13 vital imbalances inside the female body, ultimately improving whole-body health and balancing your body for baby and beyond.

Let’s Talk Hormones…

Hormones are powerful messengers found in the ovaries, testes, adrenal glands, thyroid, pancreas, and the brain, as related to fertility. An imbalance of hormones can cause PCOS or ovulation disruptions (amongst other conditions), both leading causes of infertility.

How We Test Your Hormones…

Famlee measures hormone levels with a simple blood prick test—allowing your entire healthcare team to easily read and identify any hormone imbalances. We won’t send you your results to figure out alone. Instead, during your telehealth visits, a board-certified medical provider will sit down to explain all 13 lab results and craft a customized plan of action.

The Famlee Five Fertility Hormone Focus Areas:

Thyroid hormones (TSH, free T3, free T4, thyroid peroxidase antibodies)

The thyroid is a major energy regulator in the body. It’s the engine that helps run your cells. During pregnancy, you have a lot of growing cells, and this requires a lot of energy. When the thyroid is balanced, the body feels more prepared to carry, grow and birth a baby. You need energy to feel your best, and balancing your thyroid levels can dramatically improve your overall vitality.

Ovarian hormones (FSH, LH, estradiol, AMH*, progesterone)

Your ovaries the quintessential “ticking clock” that determines how many fertile years you have left. This is essential for both family-building and, over the long term, your whole-body health. The ovarian hormones have a significant impact on the bones, brain and heart. Even if you’re not quite ready to build a family, optimizing your reproductive hormones can help ensure longevity. These hormones fluctuate throughout the reproductive cycle to help produce eggs for ovulation and prepare the uterus for pregnancy. For this reason, it’s vital to test hormones on specific days of your cycle.

These tell us a few things:

  1. How tired the ovaries are getting from their ovulation responsibilities. Looking at these hormones rules out conditions like early menopause, premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) and diminished ovarian reserve (DOR). If we see any of these conditions in your lab results, we can help advise whether trying at home or ART is the best option to help you meet your family creation and health goals.

  2. How efficient the ovaries are with their job of cycling hormones every month. Sometimes the ovaries get a little stuck and struggle with ovulation, which can throw a wrench in the healthy hormonal monthly rhythm. Looking at these hormones can help us rule out conditions like polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).

  3. Whether you’ve ovulated. Only progesterone levels tested at the appropriate time intervals can tell us if you’ve truly ovulated and if your ovary responded by releasing an egg. Ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) can tell us if your body got the green light to ovulate.

  4. How effective the ovaries are at creating an optimally sized egg at ovulation. It is important to ovulate, but it is even more important to develop a nicely sized follicle that will be compatible with pregnancy. Your progesterone levels can tell us not only that you ovulated but also how optimal that ovulation was.

*Because we are committed to your hormone health, Famlee will order an additional test for AMH if we deem necessary from your initial results.

Androgenic hormones (total testosterone, DHEA-S)

Androgenic hormones, like testosterone, are important for fertility, energy, weight balance, cognition and mood regulation. Many fertility treatments are derived from androgenic hormones. Naturally, these hormones are produced in the ovary, adrenal gland and peripheral tissues. Testosterone needs to be balanced for fertility – too much or too little can quickly become problematic. By looking at these hormones, we can rule out conditions like PCOS or make appropriate recommendations to help you address diminished ovarian reserve (DOR).

Blood sugar hormones (hemoglobin A1c, fasting insulin)

The pancreas, adrenal glands and thyroid help manage blood sugar levels. While sugar is a vital energy source for our cells, if we have more sugar in our blood than our cells can use, it irritates our blood vessels and takes up too much space. This can decrease the flow of blood to the ovaries, which impacts egg health. Hemoglobin A1c reveals your history of blood sugars spikes over the past three months, while insulin tells us if these spikes are due to an overworked, overtired pancreas, which keeps pace with blood sugar regulation. These labs help us rule out diabetes or prediabetes and determine if you are at risk for diabetes during pregnancy.

Vitamin D

This hormone is so unique it gets its own category! Vitamin D is clinically proven to help with mood, bone health, cardiovascular health and immune health. It is also known to minimize the risk of certain chronic diseases, like diabetes and heart disease, when your child becomes an adult. We are all about that kind of empowered health – not just for you but for your future children. Maintaining healthy Vitamin D levels can also minimize postpartum mood imbalances.
